Yucca baccata, various sizes
Family Asparagaceae
Originating from SW USA, New Mexico.
A stunningly architectural crown of rigid, upright leaves emerge in a shuttlecock form, and eventually from a short, stout trunk. The outstanding flower spikes of this yucca bear many fleshy, pendulous tubular blooms of a cream-flushed burgundy colour. They hang from the branches of the inflorescence which nestles amongst the leaves, usually emerging only halfway above them. They are followed by large edible fruits, elongated into a somewhat banana-like shape. If planted in free-draining soil in full sun this is a very hardy yucca for southern and coastal locations.
Height and spread after 4 – 5 years 60cm x 60cm
Semi-mature height and spread after 10 – 11 years 1.3m x 60cm
Potential height and spread after 20 – 25 years 1.8m x 1.5m, width is dependent on flowering and subsequent branching.
