Family Cyperaceae
Originating from Africa and the Arabian peninsula
Svelte and stylish, the elegantly drooping, radially arrayed long leaves of this aquatic perennial make an unmistakable exotic statement. A member of the iconic Papyrus family, it is a borderline-hardy relative of the tender true papyrus and has many of the lush and jungly qualities of its relative. Dark and lustrous ‘umbrellas’ of leaves are borne on tough stems, which produce clouds of airy tan coloured flowers in summer over the leaves. Thriving in boggy soil, in part shade, it can also be grown with its roots submerged as a marginal pond plant, if overwintered out of freezing water.
Height and spread in 2 – 5 years 1m x 50cm.
