Family Myrtaceae
Originating from Tasmania
- A beautifully angular, striking evergreen shrub with white stems and brilliant silver leaves.
- White, sea urchin-like flowers bloom winter to spring, followed by pink seed pods.
- Easy to grow, it thrives in any well-drained soil in full sun.
Brilliantly architectural, Eucalyptus pulverulenta ‘Baby Blue’ dazzles with its unique branching habit. Like stunning lightning bolts, their angular pattern is accentuated by white bark. Additionally, its rounded, silver, aromatic leaves grow directly from the stems, appearing to encircle them, further enhancing its wild originality. This Urban Jungle standout is fast-growing, despite its shrubby stature, reaching 4m tall and 2.5m wide in 10-20 years.
Its loose and airy crown casts little shade, making it perfect for underplanting. The long stems sway in the slightest breeze, tempting any passing pollinator with their pollen-laden flowers. Its endearing flowering display is borne directly from the branches, eye-catchingly between each pair of leaves.
Care Tips for Eucalyptus pulverulenta ‘Baby Blue’
- Soil & Sun: Needs well-drained soil; full sun for best vigour, tolerates light shade
- Planting: Give it room for its open crown—stake young plants in windy spots
- Watering: Keep moist while young, then drought-tough once rooted. It suits Norfolk and Suffolk’s sunnier, drier, coastal areas with ease.
- Pruning: Tip-prune in late March for bushy growth; drastic cuts in September
Bold and silver, Eucalyptus pulverulenta ‘Baby Blue’ brings crazy Tasmanian style to East Anglia’s gardens. It’s a floristry gem and structural star—see it at Urban Jungle Suffolk and Costessey!
Planting suggestions for the Dwarf Blue-Leaved Mountain Gum
Embrace the magical, unique style of Eucalyptus ‘Baby Blue’. Its long, simple, slender branches have a tentacle-like, cylindrical character with leaves and flowers borne directly from the stems.
Plant it with Acacia pravissima, an antipodean species with similar character. Buddleja alternifolia ‘Argentea’ bears its flowers on long, swaying, tassel-like branches with a similar look—all making an irresistible pollinator menu of varied blooms. Add Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Imbricata Pendula’ for a further dreamy swaying effect.
In our display gardens at Urban Jungle Suffolk, near Beccles, we have planted Phormium ‘Black Velvet’ near the Dwarf Blue-Leaved Mountain Gum. Its silver colours contrast magnificently with it, as would Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Tom Thumb’, Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla, and Pseudopanax ferox.
